A merchant navy or marine engineering is the fleet of merchant vessels that are registered in a country. The merchant navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. A career in this field is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic places. Above all this, the excellent pay and promising promotional opportunities make the career lucrative and exciting in spite of all the hard work life and long absence from family and home. They are usually employed by shipping companies on a contractual basis, which is generally of six to nine months' duration. Earlier a career in this field was considered purely for men. Women were not generally known to take up jobs in merchant navy but the past few years have seen a positive change with many women taking up jobs as ship doctors and radio officers.

Many career options that are available for any youngsterwho has dreams to join the merchant navy. The deck officers include the captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers. The engine department consists of the chief engineer, second engineer, third engineer, fourth engineer, electrical officer and junior engineers. The service department manages the kitchen, laundry and other services. Jobs are available with shipping companies in India and other countries.

A modern ship consists of a host of complex and sophisticated machinery like large diesel engines, boilers, steam engines, steam turbines, gas turbines, alternators, pumps, crosses, winches, compressors, refrigeration & air-conditioning plants etc. The role of the marine engineer is to perform the task of operating and maintaining these machinery safely and efficiently which requires a high degree of skill and expertise.

Career Prospects for Marine Engineer

After the cadets complete the four year marine engineering course and a four-modular course successfully, the student is eligible, to be appointed as junior engineer on merchant ships. On completion of the stipulated period on ships and after passing the required competency examination conducted by the directorate general of shipping, govt. of India or marine administration of other governments, the engineer becomes a chief engineer of a ship within 6 to 7 years. Eligibility: Passed 10+2 from a recognized board with 45% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics subject).

LET. ENTRY: Diploma in Mech. / Marine / EEE / ECE or relevant subject with 55% in final year and 50% marks in English in class 10th / +2 /diploma.


MEICAL:Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted (±) 2.5 with no color blindness.


This course will lead the candidates to become the captain of the ship. Captain of the ship is also referred as master mariner. On successful completion of this pre-sea training, the candidates are eligible to become nautical deck cadets on board a ship. The leading international shipping companies are regularly conducting campus interviews at our academy for the job placement. The academy assists necessary guidance for placement for successful meritorious students.

Career Prospects for Cadet

This course consists of six semesters. The b.sc (nautical science) degree will be awarded by the some university/college on the successful completion of three years duration. After 3 years, the cadets will be joining as the trainee cadet officers on board the ship. They will have to obtain 12 months sea experience. On completion of 12 months sea experience, they will be promoted directly as second officer without any further examinations. With further sea service & exams, they will be promoted to chief officer and then becoming captain of the ship.

1 year course consists of 2 semesters and exams are conducted by university/ college. After passing out the exams, the cadets will be awarded diploma nautical science by the university/ college the cadets will be joining on board vessel as a trainee cadet. They will have to obtain 18 months sea service (two years’ time will take to complete the 18 months sea experience). With this 18 months sea experience, they will undergo 4 months second mate’s foundation course & they are eligible to appear for 2nd mate exams. After passing second mate exams, they will be promoted as second officer.


ELIGIBILITYPassed 10+2 from a recognized board with 45% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics subject). (Or) b.sc in physics, chemistry, mathematics or electronics with physics as individual subject in one of the years with an average of not less than 55% marks in the final year. (Or) B.E (Or) B.Tech degree.
